Matilda Week 2
Monday 21st January
On the 21st of January we worked on 'School Song'. We worked on the choreography of the dance. We made some changes for the people that are portraying the 'Big Kids'. This is because we thought that there wasn't the intimidation that is needed to frighten the 'Little Kids'. We added more movements that can indicate the gap of power between the 'Little Kids' and the 'Big Kids', movements such as stomping my foot louder. This creates intimidation due to the fact that by stomping at a louder volume this will surprise the 'Little kids' because the first step to intimidate someone is to be loud.
Due to my absences, my character had to be changed. This is because my original character has the most amount of dialogue within the 'Big Kids'. With the sudden change, I had to quickly learn all of the dialogue because I had to show my peers our piece. Fortunately, I did not need to learn many lines due to the fact that I have been given the character with the least amount of dialogue.
One of my targets for future lessons is to turn up every single lesson due to the fact that I am just letting my group down, but I am letting myself down by not turning up. The other target for future lessons is to be able to project my voice louder. This is because I am quite shy and felt a bit insecure with my voice. So my overall target is to be able to project my voice louder and be able to be confident in my voice.
The first exercise that out class does at the start of the lesson is warming up our bodies, this can be done easily by either doing star jumps or simply do a physical exercise that makes your heart rate faster. This is because by warming up our bodies, it will help to reduce vocal damage. Another reason why warming up your bodies is so important is the fact that just like athletes, it's important to warm up and cool down your voice. You do not want to put a strain on your vocal chords because you failed to loosen up the muscles. After warming up our bodies, we will always say a tongue twister. This is because 'School Song' requires good and clear diction, some parts of the song will require good and clear diction due to the speed of the song. Also by having good diction, the audience will be able to clearly understand the words you have said.
After the exercises, we separated off into our groups. We had one of our peers missing, one of the 'Big Kids'. However this did not impact our work due to our peer having a role which only does the choreography and did not have any dialogue. My main objective for this lesson is to be much more vocal. This is because my peers complained that I was not singing loud enough for them to clearly hear in our previous run. I did this by singing at a higher octave, this is because I sung at baritone level, which could barely be heard. So instead I now sing at a low Tenner due to the fact that I could produce louder notes at a higher tone than a lower tone.
In conclusion for this lesson, I believe that I did well in terms of my choreography. My peers also told me that my projection is getting better due to the fact that they could actually hear me in our run of the performance. I will stick to a low Tenner rather than Baritone because I am able to reach a louder projection.
