Matilda Week 4

Tuesday 12th February

Personally, I needed to improve my stamina due to the fact that I am always out of breath whenever we start the choreography. I improved my stamina by going to the gym a lot more and running. This helps me control my breathing whilst doing the choreography. Another reason why I also need to improve my stamina is that I need to get the words out clearly without losing all of my breath by doing the choreography. I will do this by doing specific stamina building warm ups before each performance in order to not lose my breath as easy as I did. I need to act a lot more childlike as well because I am playing a child in our performance.

In this lesson, our group worked on mainly breath control. This is because we felt like in certain parts of the song we couldn't bring up the right note because we didn't have enough oxygen in our lungs to do so. I struggled with breath control and holding in more oxygen due to my Asthma and me smoking, however, I still tried my best in our exercise that we did to improve breath control. For the exercise that we did, we stood flat on our feet and kept our shoulders back to be much more relaxed rather than tense. We then imagined a string coming out of the top of our head that will keep us standing straight and tall. We then placed our hands on our stomach and took a breath from our diaphragm. We imagined our lungs and diaphragm filling up with air like a balloon and then we felt out stomach expand and contract as we inhaled and exhaled out. I tried not to be tense due to the fact that it will disturb my control of my inhale and exhale so by not hunching up my shoulders and trying not to gasp for air. We then breathed in for a count of four and then exhaled through our teeth with a 'sssss' sound for a count of four. When we came up to four, we stopped the exhale crisply. Even though we exhaled out for 4 seconds i still had a lot of air in my lungs. However, I was not prepared with the next step due to the fact that I still had to inhale in for 4 seconds but exhaled out for 8 seconds, then to 12 seconds, then to 14 seconds. Each time we increased the time to exhale and I couldn't keep up due to the fact that I didn't have enough capacity in my lungs to do so. However, this exercise helped my breath control due to the fact that I could now sing the right notes without losing my breath so easily my stamina has greatly increased because in my spare time I will got out to the Gym and focus on stamina building exercises that will benefit me in my overall performance.

This was the last lesson before our Half-Term. So I asked my group what I would need to focus on during the Half-Term. I still wanted to focus on breath control to fully make sure that I have mastered or at least improved on my inhale and exhale and my timings in when to breath in and out. This will help me in my journey to not only sing the right note, but to also have enough oxygen in my lungs to fully get the words out. I also needed to work on my facial expressions yet again. This is a recurring incident in where I simply just look like I have a 'monotone face' where my face is totally devoid of emotion. I worked on having an 'intimidating' facial expression, so basically having my face look angry to intimidate the younger kids. This will help with my intention of scaring the little kids.
During the half-term I tried going over the actual performance by myself. I did this by trying new facial expressions to further my characterisation. My overall target for the half term is to go over the whole song and to make sure that I project during the higher parts in order for me to be heard. I will also try to go through the entire choreography to the best of my ability without me having to use the blocks. This, in my opinion, will be useful as it means I will not need to rely on my group to help me get through the performance. This proved to be a very difficult task because I needed to master my queues on my choreography and this was near to impossible without having my group. So overall, the entire of the half-term I worked on breath control and facial expressions so that my intention of 'intimidating the little kids' is easily recognised.
