Matilda Week 3
Tuesday 5th February
I did some late night work in terms of finding out the best exercises for breath control, this is because my group were struggling to find out when to breath in the parts of the song which requires a lot of breath to accomplish. We were all struggling to find the timing because of the vast speed and length of the paragraph. In the end I was able to find out a exercise that we were able to try out. The exercise consisted of just breathing in for 5 seconds and breathing out for 5 seconds, which we then raised up to 10 seconds in and 10 seconds out.
I struggled with being able to say the words because I am always out of breath. However, I managed to control my breath and I was able to find out when I am meant to breath. Having control of your breath can be a good asset because you are able to know when to breath in to produce the right notes.
Due to the change of my character, I do not have to learn any dialogue so I spend my time researching about the 'Big Kids'. I do not need to do a lot of research due to the fact that I have already gotten to know my character.
Characterisation
For characterisation, I worked on mainly facial expressions. This is because my character does not require any dialogue and so I do not need to work on my characters vocal aspects. Firstly, I read the script and the words. I found out that my character is trying to intimidate the little kids. I needed to work on facial expressions because my peers said that I just look like myself whenever we ran through our piece. At home I usually try to try out other facial expressions to reach our goal of 'Intimidating the facial expressions'.
There was not a lot needed for my character except being able to pull of a 'Intimidating' persona to the little kids. Another way for me to show that my character is trying to intimidate the little kids is that I have tried to be a lot more vocal and making my movements much more powerful. By being more vocal and much louder, this shocks the little kids and intimidates them due to the risen volume of the little kids. I made my movements much more powerful by being faster in terms of the speed of the choreography. In the final performance, the speed of the choreography worked towards my intention of making my movements faster, this is because our designated pianist was playing at a much faster speed than expected and so I used this to my advantage by over exaggerating my movements and overall putting in a much faster than usual performance. An example of when I exaggerated my movements was when the line we sang the line 'And even, if you put in heaps of effort' I tried to stomp on the floor as loud as possible to 'intimidate' the little kids and overall seem much more intimidating. Overall I believe that I have succeeded in my my intention of intimidating the little kids by over emphasising my movements and being much more vocal
Overall, my main target is to focus more on facial expressions due to the fact that I believe that I lack the skills in facial expressions. This is because we had a run through our performance and it was recorded, when we looked at our performance my facial expressions didn't show as I intended and so I will focus on making a much more prominent expression in our overall performance.
