Matilda Week 1

Friday 11th January

In my first lesson working on 'School Song' from Matilda, I learnt some background information on Matilda due to the task that we had to research about Matilda. My peers shared their research about what they found, so I added in more extra information to my research to which I did not have. I was not feeling well so I was not present in the class. However, I asked my classmates about the information that they found on 'Matilda The Musical' so I added in new information. I researched further about the authors, composers and the background of Matilda. The musical, Matilda, is based upon the 1988 children's novel by Roald Dahl. It was given a stage adaptation by Dennis Kelly, the composer being Tim Minchin and the choreographer being Peter Darling, the first ever performance was on 9th December 2010. It premiered at the Royal Shakespeare's Company's The Courtyard Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon in November 2010, however, opened on the West at Cambridge Theatre on the 24th November 2011. Following the performance, in 2012, Matilda won 7 Olivier awards and it currently holds the records for the most won by a Musical and it won 5 Tony awards.

The musical is about a 5 year old with the gift of telekinesis, who loves reading and overcomes obstacles which is caused by her family and her school, and helps her teacher try to reclaim her life. The style and genre is humorous because it includes very witty language, much like the novel. Roald Dahl's intention was to show Matilda to not be a generic little girl, but to portray her as a hero in the novel. The novel and the musical alike show how girls can be make heroic role and it doesn't have to be a generic male protagonist being the hero, his intention making both of the female leads appear independent and Matilda outsmarted her parents and stood up to Miss Trunchball in a way that only males would in modern and traditional narratives.

Matilda includes many other themes such as: 'Violence, Family, Good vs Evil, Freedom and Confinement, The Supernatural and Education'. This could be considered darker and not suitable for younger audiences and meant for Adults due to the fact that it has quite a dark selection for its themes.

I was not present in the previous lesson, 8th January, working on 'School Song' from Matilda due to the fact that I was not feeling well. I researched about Matilda to make up the my absence from the lesson. In the lesson I missed, my group did the choreography for 'School Song' to which I had to learn by watching my group. In the end I caught up with the choreography, however, I had not learnt all of my lines that I had to say in the song. After the lesson, I spent some time in learning my lines and the lyrics in the song so that I could focus on the choreography and not drag my group down by simply not knowing my lines. I set a target of catching up with my group by learning the lyrics of the song 'School Song' from Matilda and to focus on the choreography outside school times. My group has already learnt the choreography so I did not want to drag my group down. In the lesson we also did some breathing exercises and to know when to breath perfectly. We broke the song 'School Song' down so that we could know when to breath. In technicality we did breath control. The song requires good diction and annunciation so we do some exercises before singing to warm up our voices to avoid our voices from breaking and producing the wrong note.

My target for the lesson was to research further on Matilda, this is for me to get a vast understanding of the Musical so that I know the Musical like the back of my hand. I am playing the character of a 'Big Kid' named 'Peter'. Peter has quite a deep voice due to the fact that he is much older than the little kids which is perfect for me due to the fact that I myself have quite a deep voice. I need to research more on Peter because I know little to none about Peter, I want to know their intentions and their motivations so that I could show that in my performance and to expand to it. I want to be able to play Peter how the playwright would like to portray him. I want to show this vocally and physically so that it's shown that I have researched on the character. I will do this by applying what I have learnt from my research and turn it into art into my performance.
